Mary Sheehan Artist

Mary Sheehan was born in County Cork South West Ireland in 1963. She started out studying painting and drawing at the Crawford College of Art in Cork , moving then to the National College of Art in Dublin where she graduated with a BA in Fine Art.

Mary paints almost exclusively the landscape of her native area Sliabh Lucra “The land of the rushes”. Her unique interpretation of this wetland through oils is an unmistakable feast of colour and texture. “ I have a compulsion to represent what I see around me … The dance of light on the land, its reflection on a bog pool, the emerging colours of the different seasons, the weather, the subtleties of surface, partial shade and the unabashed effect of full sunshine transforming the stones from a dull grey to the most intense cadmium yellow, this ever changing place that never fails to excite me.

She attributes her major influence to the great Spanish painter of yesteryears Fancisco Jose De Goya Y Lucientes with the credit for the passion she possesses for painting today. If I live to be five score and ten I’ll still be in awe and learning.

Mary’s paintings are in many private collections the world over
