Peter Curling Artist

Born in Waterford in 1955, Peter Curling is widely acknowledged as one of the finest equestrian artists of our time.

He spent his early years in Co. Clare before moving to England in 1963 where he was educated. His interest in art was stimulated by his parents’ own interests – his father having worked in the Abbey Theatre and his mother having been involved with selling of sporting paintings and prints.

While in England Curling won an art scholarship to Millfield, where his work was seen by Aylmer Tryon, founder of the Tryon Gallery. So impressed was Tyron with Curling’s abilities that he arranged for the young artist visit Florence to study drawing with the eminent tutor Signorina Nerina Simi in Florence

The artist has had a fascination with horses since early childhood when he was allowed to visit the local stables and sketch and paint. He lived for a time in Newmarket, riding out with the eminent trainer Michael Stoute, and was also privileged to have spent a brief time in Spain in 1974 with the great equestrian artist John Skeaping RA, whom he cites as a great influence. He returned permanently to Ireland in 1975 to devote equal attention to horses and to his art. He now lives in Tipperary where he has spent his life closely involved with horses.

Well known internationally for his work depicting horses, his paintings have been reproduced as Signed Limited Edition Prints and sold the world over by the UK publisher Felix Rosenstiels & Sons . His work concentrates on movement and atmosphere and he relies on an in depth knowledge of every aspect of the horse and it’s surroundings. As well as painting horses Peter also paints a variety of other subjects, he paints both portraits and landscapes and has spent a lot of time in recent years in Venice.

Now so successful in the art world that he has taken the conscious decision to accept no more commissions, preferring to concentrate solely instead on work which inspires him.
